At the weekend I was working with my colleague @julieclose on a very hot day to facilitate an Away Day for the Board of a small charity who were wanting to evaluate where they are currently.

What did we do?

  • Scoping the day - feelings and expectations

  • SWOT analysis - looking at strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats

  • Skills audit and gap analysis

  • Exit planning for Board members

  • New Charity Commission guidelines on trustee governance

  • Action planning - developing priorities for the next 6 months.

  • Review and evaluation of progress

We allowed plenty of time for reflection and space for challenge, work in pairs and discussion in the larger group.

And there was cake. Always important to have cake!

Reflection

It was an intense and hardworking day but we achieved a lot and they were able to make some key decisions and obtain clarity about the way forward.

The Board mostly meet online and so the positive impact of discussing these things in person and informally chatting over lunch can't be underestimated.

It's always immensely rewarding and a privilege as a consultant to be part of a process like this.

If your charity Board or organisation Senior Leadership Team would benefit from some time apart from the everyday to evaluate progress in this way then do get in touch for a further conversation.
